Novel functionalized cellulose derivatives fabricated with Cu nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization and degradation of organic pollutants

In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was modified to oxidized (OC), 6-deoxycellulose hydrazide and (N,N-diethyl)amine (MCC-Hyd MCC-DEM) derivatives employed as supporting material for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles (NPs). Copper ions from aqueous solution were adsorbed then reduced zero valent (ZVC) NPs using sodium borohydride on films prepared derivatives. The characterization Cu embedded performed Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Ultraviolet/Visible (UV–VIS) degradation studies 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) various azo dyes viz. Congo Red, Methylene Blue, Methyl orange. Results revealed that all showed only in presence ZVC NPs. Oxidized cellulose, MCC-Hyd MCC-DEM excellent efficiencies (> 85%) cases. Our findings MCC could be efficient renewable candidates removal water pollutants future.Graphical abstract
